London, United kingdom - May 1, 2011 : Hyde Park, Speaker's corner, man holding a speech on the subject of faith, is arguing vehemently with a member of his audience. Speaker's corner has been a free speech area where open-air public speaking and debate is encouraged. Although public speaking is actually allowed everywhere in the UK, the speaker's corner is traditionally the place where, as long as lawful, the most controversial issues can be aired.

Yara Vrolijks: The smallest act of kindness can change some ones day entirely. This thing happened to me when I was in London three years ago and somehow it always stuck with me. It was during rush hour and the bus was filled with passengers. It was a bit dreadful, but the busdriver greeted me kindly and asked how my day was. The way he looked straight into my eyes touched me. Even though it was such a short moment, i felt that he genuinely cared. He gave me attention and I believe that this bonding with others is what makes us truly happy. Many students nowadays are so focused on getting good grades, or building up their cv, that they forget what is really important to them. This is why I came up the idea of the MIND conference (Academiegebouw 28 th November). I wanted to inspire young people to explore the value of compassion in their professional and private lives. It's a day with speakers from fields like business, education and health care. They talk about how they succesfully applied compassion in their work and hopefully this event will inspire people to find their own way of being compassionate and happy.
