The photograph below shows me as a boy in 1962. My grandfather, also named Paul, never travelled far, but loved studying maps with me — using the magnifying glass in the picture — and telling me stories about people in distant places.
That made me curious about other people. Over time, I began to recognize how deeply similar we are in the routines of daily life.
We are all here, each of us alone inside our own mind, yet much more alike than we often realize. It is a small thing, but perhaps the greatest gift we can receive is to be seen and recognized.
